United StatesGreat Upper. A few Quirks to note.
I wanted a slick side receiver for my 300 Blackout Pistol Build, and AR15Discounts had a great deal on this NBS. I really like the lightweight and minimalist feel of the upper, and the angular features pair well with my Aero M4E1 lower. I wish I had gotten the matching handguard, but this was a budget build, and the lowest bidder got the purchase (I went with a Ghost). I get a lot of compliments on its looks at the range. Fit with the lower is great. Barrel installed easily. The dust cover, however, was an adventure. That little circular ring that holds the dust cover rod in does not work on this upper. There is no circle machined on the side of the upper to thread the rod through. Thankfully, I discovered the Strike Industries Ultimate Dust Cover, which doesn't use that rod. This will be the dust cover that goes on all my builds from now on. The SI cover installed in about 2 minutes. Shooting: The side of the NBS upper receiver is so slick that it doesn't even have a traditional brass deflector on it. It's super flat, so brass comes out of the port and hits the top corner of the port on its way out. After just one mag, I noticed that the finish was chipped a little bit. It's not enough to take away one of the five stars, but you should be aware of it if you are worried about keeping your gun in mint condition. Someone told me never to trust a guy with no scratches on his gun. Bottom line, I will probably buy another one for my 556 pistol build in 2020. Thanks, NBS and AR15Discounts.com.

Found out quickly that thin, clamp-style handguards with anti-rotation fins won't work with this upper. The handguard body (and the fins) seem to be flush with the upper, so you need a wider handguard or one without anti-rotation fins. I am kinda' disappointed, since I had some extra thin handguards.

NBS Slick Side Upper Receiver
I've used a few of these receivers in the past and they worked great, nice and slim....but with an ejection port door. This last one had an Out of Spec issue. I didn't notice it until I was ready to assemble, and after a Hydrodip finish. The barrel index slot was machined too wide, which caused the barrel to be off center when torqued to 40 ft lbs, and aligning the gas tube hole. But as usual, AR15 Discounts GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE sent a return label quickly, and I will be getting a replacement soon. I will buy these again.

Slick side Upper - FDE
Really like the finish on this upper. FDE color pairs very well with the other FDE parts of the build. I love the reduced weight associated with not having a forward assist and reduced shell deflector.

This upper receiver looks really cool, especially in conjunction with a lower with a less rounded, more angular appearance. It also lacks a forward assist, which Eugene Stoner himself thought was unnecessary, so you can feel vindicated in being a hipster. The lack of a brass deflector makes this a poor choice for a left-handed shooter. The finish will likely scratch off of the top point at the rear of the ejection port immediately when you start shooting with it, but you should consider a different hobby if you're afraid of a scratch or two acquired from actually shooting your rifle.
