Necessary for a specific combination of parts
It's kind of weird that this one series of handguards needs this one part to work properly with one brand of upper receiver, but I just so happened to pick that very combination for my AR. AR15D's armorers will install this for you if you use their complete upper configurator; Just mention it in the order notes to be sure.
