Many forward assists are constructed with the push button simply press-fitted into place. I sought one where the button cap was drilled and secured with a roll pin. While it may not be necessary, I preferred it for added assurance. The Dirty Bird AR-15 Forward Assist Kit is designed in this manner. The unit I received featured a drilled push button, affixed with a roll pin through the cap. The rest of the components appear to be well-crafted and fit nicely. All parts are made of steel, providing all that is necessary in a forward assist. It's a quality component.
USJust a heads up.......Out of Spec!
Purchased the DirtyBird forward assist recently and it was completely out of spec. Isolated incident? Maybe.....but the roll pin that retains it in the upper receiver was making contact with the flat surface of the stem when driven home, locking up forward movement of the entire forward assist plunger! I was able to correct the situation with judicious use of a flat jewelers file to reduce the flat surface on the stem and restore clearance so the plunger would move. As stated, this might be an isolated incident but be aware!
