Disappointed with Aero on this one
Summary: I tend to steer towards Aero Precision when building AR's because they're reliable and cost-effective, but with this upper I realized that there is a serious limit to performance with their parts. TL:DR the accuracy of Aero's 6.5 Grendel barrel is lacking on this upper Comments: I wanted to give 6.5 Grendel a try for a SPR/DMR style rifle build, and I wanted to make it easy on myself and just grab a complete upper rather than build it from scratch. I used all Aero and Strike Industries internals, lower receiver/parts, and ran Hornady Custom and Hornady Black 123gr ammo through it. Multiple articles and chatrooms recommended Hornady Black very highly for accurate 6.5 Grendel shooting. After breaking in the barrel and cleaning, I struggled to keep rounds on target at 200yds on an 8" steel plate. I was shooting from a supported position, using an Arken EPL-4, with no wind, and consider myself a competent shooter. I can reliably keep a decent group with other rifles at that distance, but with this 6.5 Grendel upper it was virtually 50% fliers and 50% somewhat POA/POI. For the price of this upper, I was disappointed with the results. Magazine after magazine on multiple trips, I could not consistently group my shots. I'm giving it 3 stars because the build quality on the receiver, the hand guard, and gas block are all top notch like I'm used to from Aero. I believe the barrel is the main weakness here, especially if the goal is a budget precision rifle. I am also not giving it a lower rating because I only ran two types of Hornady ammo through it, it is possible another manufacturer would pair better with the barrel and yield more accurate results; however Hornady Black should have been the best round according to other more experienced shooters. The mediocre rating is no reflection on AR15Discounts whatsoever, they are my go-to for all things AR-15 and have some of the greatest customer service you can find. They ship quickly, are always prompt in communicating, and never disappoint. This rating is solely a remark on Aero's 6.5 Grendel 20" complete upper.
