Slim & light, but not well thought out...
Okay, so this review is only pertaining to the B5 Systems Handguard, not about AR15Discounts (which is a pleasure to do business with). These handguards are indeed slim and light, but it lacks miserably at doing what a handguard is mostly intended to do, which is to GUARD YOUR HAND. Expect to have your rifle's gas tube either literally contacting, or almost contacting, the front and rear areas of the these handguards. Since the heat shield only covers the bottom and sides, the easily heated up gas tube is left very close to the top of the handguard, making it a bad idea to grasp it with a modern thumb over top hold. Even if one plans to do a more traditional forward hold, just remember that the slimness of these guards can easily cause for one to have a finger or two reach that danger hot zone. Since the gas tube can be so close, or even touching the top of the handguard, the plastic is exposed to intense heat that can easily deform or melt them, (a phenomenon not unheard of with these B5 handguards). These just don't work that great at being a handguard. Being slim and light can be a great thing, but not being much of a handguard is not great. Frankly, the handguard does poorly at guarding the hand, or as a component that can actually handle the heat to maintain it's integrity. Fit and finish is okay, but not great. It's a little wonky where the two halves don't flush up all the way across at their adjoining seam, so don't be surprised if you see a gap or two between them. Where I could see these being a decent handguard, (not a great one), is if it's going to be used on a 9mm AR15 carbine. Since a 9mm AR does not use a gas tube, or heat up as quickly as something like a standard 5.56 caliber rifle does, then this handguard could be a decent choice. For a centerfire rifle caliber AR, I would definitely not recommend this product.
